Massive 100-Vehicle Pileup Shuts Down I‑196 in West Michigan

West Michigan, Jan. 19, 2026 – A massive multi-vehicle pileup involving around 100 cars and trucks occurred on Interstate 196 near Zeeland Township in West Michigan this morning. The crash forced authorities to close the highway between Exit 62 (Hudsonville) and Exit 55 (Zeeland) for several hours.

The accident happened during severe winter weather, including heavy snow and reduced visibility, creating dangerous conditions that contributed to the chain-reaction collision.

Emergency services responded quickly, and 9–12 people were reported injured, all transported to nearby hospitals. Fortunately, no fatalities have been confirmed at this time.

Authorities warned drivers to avoid travel in the area until conditions improve and urged motorists to maintain safe distances and slow down during winter storms.

The highway has since reopened after crews cleared the wreckage, but officials remind travelers that West Michigan roads can be particularly hazardous in snow and ice, especially on busy highways like I‑196.
