But Lorna’s fear hardened the moment she realized who he was. Wendell contacted his assistant and ordered the archived Georgia safety records preserved and reviewed by independent counsel rather than quietly handled inside the same management chain. What came back changed the situation entirely. An original maintenance report carried Caleb’s name and documented abnormal temperature readings despite sensors showing safe conditions; it recommended shutting testing down pending inspection. A later management directive had allowed testing to continue. Internal correspondence also raised questions about how Caleb’s medical claim and safety complaint had been characterized afterward. The documents did not, by themselves, prove that Hayes Renewables legally caused Caleb’s death, and Wendell knew causation would require medical evidence, occupational records, engineering analysis, and potentially formal investigation. But they were enough to show that Caleb’s warning deserved scrutiny and that senior leadership may not have received the complete story. More troubling still, the executive who had approved the continuation of testing—Chief Operating Officer Elliot Lawson—was now trying to convince the board that Wendell’s sudden investigation threatened the company.
By morning, Wendell had retained outside counsel, directed that relevant emails, safety files, medical-claim records, and engineering data be placed under a litigation hold, and notified the board’s independent directors that the Georgia incident required external review. Lawson was removed from direct control over the inquiry while the company’s audit committee considered the evidence; any employment consequences, regulatory referrals, or civil liability would depend on what investigators ultimately established. Wendell also made one thing clear to Lorna and Jaylen: nothing about helping their family would buy silence. Lorna would have independent counsel before discussing any settlement, insurance claim, workers’ compensation issue, or wrongful-death theory arising from Caleb’s case. Jaylen’s prototype would remain his intellectual property unless a lawful agreement—reviewed on his behalf because he was a minor—said otherwise. If Hayes Renewables wanted to test or license his concept, it would have to compensate him fairly, document ownership and attribution, and involve his mother and independent legal advisers. Wendell could not repair four lost years with a check, and he could not promise a courtroom outcome. What he could do was stop treating a family’s history as a line item.
Weeks later, Wendell returned to Pine Hollow without lawyers, executives, or a polished presentation. Jaylen was in the shed again, adjusting the same unfinished power box that had started the conversation. The company investigation was still underway, Caleb’s records were being reviewed by specialists, and Jaylen had not agreed to license anything. Wendell preferred it that way.
