What Does the “M” Mean on a Wedding RSVP Card? How to Fill It Out

A wedding response card arrives with a single “M” beside a blank line, leaving you wondering what to write. The explanation is simple: the letter begins a courtesy title such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss. Guests traditionally complete the title and then add their full name. This familiar feature of formal wedding stationery is a prompt for identifying who is responding. You do not need to write a separate message or know any special wedding terminology to complete it.

To fill in the line, treat the printed “M” as the first letter of your preferred title. For example, if you use “Ms.” and your name is Emily Johnson, write “s. Emily Johnson” immediately after the printed letter. The completed line will read “Ms. Emily Johnson.” You can also write your full title and name clearly across the line without worrying about perfectly joining the printed character. If you use a title such as Dr., or prefer no title, cross out or bypass the “M” and write your name as you normally would.

Next, mark whether you will attend using the options provided. A completed response might read: “Ms. Emily Johnson” on the name line, a check beside “Accepts with pleasure,” and “1” in the number-attending space, if the card includes one. If meal choices are requested, select your preference as instructed. For multiple invited guests with different meal selections, use names or initials to show which choice belongs to each person. If you cannot attend, still include your name and mark the decline option so the couple knows you have responded.

When replying for a household or couple, follow the names listed on the invitation and any accompanying instructions. Being invited does not automatically include additional relatives, children, or a guest. If two people are invited but only one can attend, identify both clearly and indicate who accepts and who declines. Return the card by the requested deadline, using the enclosed envelope when one is provided. For an online RSVP, enter the requested names and complete the attendance and meal fields before submitting your response.

Couples who want to simplify their response cards can replace the traditional “M” with “Name(s)” or “Names of Invited Guests.” These alternatives accommodate different titles and make the instructions easier to understand. Traditional wording remains an option, too, especially when paired with clear attendance choices and a response deadline. Whatever the design, the useful details are the same: a readable name, an unambiguous acceptance or decline, and any requested information that helps the couple prepare for their guests.
